Spiritual Eyes

The eyes of the Spirit spoken of throughout the Bible are seven (Zech.4:10). They are the eyes which give us spiritual vision to discern spiritual truths. The people of the world have only five senses: seeing, feeling, hearing, touching and tasting. However, those who have had a spiritual birth are endowed with supernatural eyes to look into the world of the spirit.

The seven candlesticks which Moses made for the tabernacle in Exod.25:37 represent the eyes of the Lord throughout the Bible, and the seven churches in the Book of Revelation are seven candlesticks (Rev.1:20). A true church of Jesus Christ, when the Holy Spirit is allowed to come in, is able to see the real truth of the words in the Bible and be as a candle to give light to an unbelieving world.

People of the world should not be condemned for not having spiritual eyes because, if they have not been exposed to the Light of the Bible, there is no way they can see beyond the natural world. Jesus said, "I am the Light of the world" (John 8:12), and only as we come close to Him can we discern truth from error and are given His light to overcome the darkness around us.

Elisha, the prophet, had spiritual eyes when he saw an army of horses and chariots of fire - the army of his God - among the Syrian army approaching down the mountain in front of him. This spiritual sight enabled him to say to his servant, "Don't be afraid for our army is bigger than theirs." His servant couldn't see God's warriors of angels until Elisha prayed, "Lord, open his eyes and let him see" and then the servant also saw God's army there (II Kings 6:15-17). Prayers of others can open our eyes to see spiritual things when we are going through difficult times.

As we learn to follow closely in the footsteps of our Master and obey His Commandments, as he gives to us a born-again experience, our eyes begin to open. If we ask Him, in faith, He baptizes us with His Holy Spirit and our eyes open more. As we read our Bible and experience his power in our life, the periphery of vision widens until we can also tune in to the world of evil and Satan's activities.

As we come closer to our God and understand His ways in our world, we learn to pray in accordance with His will. We seek His will rather than our own in all things. We never try to make Him OUR servant, but we remember that He is the King and WE the servants. We let Him be God, and not try to be God ourselves. He becomes our "Counsellor" (John 14:26) as we learn to listen to His advice as to which course of action to take in our daily walk with Him.

As our eyes open, we look to the heavens and see, not clouds, but a heaven loaded with manna - good things available to us for the asking (Matt.21:22). These blessings are the "hidden manna", the secret nourishment from Heaven available to the victorious people of the end-time church (Rev.2:17).

Spiritual vision is more to be desired than wealth or pleasures as this vision gives us sight into the world of the spirit where eternal values lie. Give me "medicine to heal my eyes" to restore my sight to see that I am "spiritually wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked" (Rev.3:17-18).

Open my eyes that I may see Jesus!
