Prayer of Unity

May We All Be One

Father God, we want to thank You
For sending us your Son--your one and only Son--
Your very self--
To live among us to teach us your ways
That we might know how You want us to live in this world of sin
For your ways are not our ways nor your thoughts our thoughts.

Thank You, thank You for Jesus
Through Him we can come to You to find peace,
To find rest and comfort and joy
Through His resurrection from the grave we can receive His Spirit
As did the early church on the day of Pentecost,
The day on which your Holy Spirit fell
And they all spoke in tongues to release your power
That they might boldly proclaim your Word in the streets.

We pray now for your Spirit to once again
Fall on your church as on that day--the day they all became one.
May we who receive your Spirit on the doorposts of our hearts
Join together today that we too be one,
Not one as in the days of old when they grieved You
By joining together with foreign gods who are not yours
For You are a holy God, an ALL mighty God,
A God in three persons, blessed trinity,
The only God who came in the flesh to save mankind, went to heaven
Then returned in your Spirit that we all may be one--
One with the Father and one with your Son--
The prayer your Son prayed for those who would come after Him
In all generations to come:

"You Father are in Me, and I in You
That they also may be one in Us--
That the world may believe that You sent Me
And the glory which You gave Me I have given them
That they may be one, just as We are one,
I in them and You in Me."

So now we again pray your prayer
That we all may be one
One in the Father and one in the Son
One in the Father and one in the Son
We now join together all who believe--
One in the Father and one in the Son.
